Paul Graham: 1939 – 2026, RIP
I have just been advised of the passing of Australian Icon of Bodybuilding, Paul Graham, on May 10th. He was 87.
Paul Graham was also a Vice President of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness.
Born in 1939, Paul Graham was the former President of the Australian Bodybuilding Federation and was the pioneer who built the IFBB in Australia from the very early days. He was also the far-sighted promoter who brought the 1980 Mr. Olympia to Sydney Australia. It was only the second time that the event has been held in the Southern Hemisphere. (1975 South Africa was the first.)
Paul Graham and Arnold Schwarzenegger became lifelong friends, with Arnold and Paul training together in LA. They shared an apartment in Los Angeles for several years, with Arnold being Best Man at Paul and Carole’s wedding. Paul and Carole were also guests at Arnold’s wedding.
As far as I know, Paul competed from the 1960s to the mid-1970s. I had the privilege to shoot the video of the 1972 IFBB Southern Hemisphere Mr. Universe when Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu guest posed for the first time in Australia. Paul Graham was in outstanding shape that day placing second to Frank Colombera.
I recall the publicity it created when Paul wrestled a large crocodile. I remember him rolling the giant over, and after about 10 minutes or so subduing it with some sort of hold.
Paul and Carole were the organizers of many international events here in this country and brought virtually all the USA champions to Australia for posing and seminar tours.
We extend our condolences to his wife Carole and their daughter. Rest in peace Paul Graham.
