Night of Champions: 1990 and 1991

1990 / 1991 NOC Video

The 1990 Night of Champions was an iconic IFBB contest famously won by Mohamed Benaziza. He used his signature “giant-killer” blend of extreme conditioning and dense muscle maturity to defeat an unknown, massively structured newcomer named Dorian Yates. Danny Padilla took third place. It was a massive event of 26 competitors and packed with the world stars of professional bodybuilding.
The 1990 IFBB Night of Champions, was held at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City on Saturday, April 28, 1990.
The event became a historic turning point in professional bodybuilding for several reasons:
The Outcome and Significance
• The Winner (Mohamed Benaziza): Standing at just 5’2″ (158 cm), Benaziza overwhelmed the lineup with his granite-hard, dry, and detailed physique. His sharp proportions and crazy back definition made him a fan favourite and perfectly exemplified the classic “giant killer” archetype.
• The Runner-Up (Dorian Yates): The contest marked the highly anticipated American pro debut of English bodybuilder Dorian Yates. Although larger and heavily cheered by the New York crowd, Yates lacked the ultimate conditioning he would later perfect, resulting in a narrow loss to Benaziza.
• Third Place (Danny Padilla): Veteran bodybuilder Danny Padilla made a highly successful return to the stage, securing a well-deserved third spot among a stacked field.
Career Fallout
For Dorian Yates, placing second at this specific show was the catalyst he needed to commit fully to the sport. He famously promised himself that if he did not place in the top five, he would walk away from competitive bodybuilding and focus on running his gym in England. This loss motivated him to improve his conditioning, ultimately propelling him to an unprecedented six consecutive Mr. Olympia titles from 1992 to 1997.

The 1991 IFBB Night of Champions was held on May 18 at the Beacon Theater in New York City. Dorian Yates secured the victory, widely utilizing the event as a springboard to his historic professional career. The contest is remembered for a dramatic WBF defection protest and a highly competitive lineup.
The contest opened with a theatrical display featuring 13 tombstones that bore the names of prominent bodybuilders who had recently defected to the newly formed World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF). The tombstones were dramatically broken onstage, highlighting the tense promoter and federation rivalries of the era. Despite the loss of several top-tier competitors, the IFBB show proceeded with a tough and deeply conditioned international lineup.
Dorian Yates of England brought a vastly improved, denser physique than in previous years, which allowed him to easily sweep the top spot and earn a clear entry into the 1991 Mr. Olympia. His performance was characterized by aggressive, battle-like posing routines and unprecedented back thickness that shocked the audience. The rest of the top tier featured standout international veterans and rising stars.
“I actually came in 7-8lbs heavier in ’91 at the NOC after a great year of training and improvements and I felt it was now my time to step onto the grandest stage of all. Dorian Yates”

For Dorian Yates, winning the 1991 Night of Champions proved to be the catalyst for his legendary 90s dominance. Following this victory, he went on to make his Mr. Olympia debut later that year, where he placed a narrow and highly debated second to the reigning champion Lee Haney. Sonny Schmidt and Geir Borgan Paulsen also leveraged their top three finishes at the Beacon Theater to validate their elite IFBB pro status.
